Developer: ORPALIS – PaperScan (Free Edition)
This Android App (Microsoft Lens) is currently in beta but is one of the best document scanners out there. What impresses me is the accuracy of the scans (corner detection) and the clarity of the result. If you are in the world of Microsoft and use OneNote and OneDrive, this is a must-have app. When you complete a scan you are given the option to upload the scan (PDF or Image option) to OneNote, OneDrive or both. You can also convert the scan of a document to Microsoft Word or Powerpoint using OCR technology (Optical Character Recognition). Since this is in beta, you may have to sign up as a beta tester to download the app.
Scan and upload all your notes, receipts, and documents. Increase your productivity by eliminating time spent looking for documents or business cards. Sketch your ideas and snap a picture for later. Whether you’re using it for business or education, Office Lens will help you save and share your documents in OneNote and OneDrive so you can all work together.
Recently CamScanner, my go-to android app to scan documents on my smartphone, made the news for using an advertising library that injected malicious code onto devices. I don’t know if the developers were aware of this or not; but, it was enough for me to uninstall CamScanner and start looking at other options.
What I found was this. There are 3-three really good document scanner options out there that will not cost you a cent that is developed by names we all have come to recognize. Those names being Microsoft, Google and Adobe (see below). — Rick @ What’s On My PC
Now convert your smartphone into a mini pocket scanner and enjoy the high-quality image in your device within just one touch with the best ever scanning mobile app Clear Scanner: Free PDF Scans. Clear Scanner lets you quickly scan any kind of documents in your office, images, bills, receipts, books, magazines, class notes and anything that needs to be there in your device within no time. This is the fastest means to get the scanned document in the highest quality and convert it immediately into PDF or JPEG format so that you can share the scanned document, image, books, bills, important notes or any kind of paper that you can think of.
In my opinion, after testing many scanner apps, CamScanner is top dog. As a matter of fact, I liked the free version so much I purchased the app. At home, I do not own a printer/scanner combo as most people do. I use CamScanner on my phone as my scanner and have found I have used it more than when I did have a computer connected scanner. It is fast, will auto align, auto brighten, and gives multiple options to save the document to the cloud (such as Google Drive, Box, Gmail, etc…). I suggest giving it try… CamScanner is available for Android and iPhone.
I have written about FastStone Image Viewer here on the blog in the past and can attest that it is probably one of the best, if not the best, image viewer out there. As a matter of fact, it carries a 5 star CNet rating. I think if you use it you will find that it is more than just an image viewer
FastStone Image Viewer is a fast, stable, user-friendly image browser, converter and editor. It has a nice array of features that include image viewing, management, comparison, red-eye removal, emailing, resizing, cropping, retouching and color adjustments. Its innovative but intuitive full-screen mode provides quick access to EXIF information, thumbnail browser and major functionalities via hidden toolbars that pop up when your mouse touches the four edges of the screen. Other features include a high quality magnifier and a musical slideshow with 150+ transitional effects, as well as lossless JPEG transitions, drop shadow effects, image annotation, scanner support, histogram and much more. It supports all major graphic formats (BMP, JPEG, JPEG 2000, animated GIF, PNG, PCX, PSD, EPS, TIFF, WMF, ICO and TGA) and popular digital camera RAW formats (CRW, CR2, NEF, PEF, RAF, MRW, ORF, SRF, ARW, SR2, RW2 and DNG).
For example, buried in Fastone Image Viewer is an option where you can scan documents and save them as PDF files. I personally use this all of the time to convert my paper documents to the digital PDF format.
To get to this feature, launch FastStone Image Viewer, click on the File menu, and select Acquire Image From Scanner.
You will then be taken to the Acquire Image From Scanner workspace where you simply click on the scan button to begin your scans.
Typically, by default, this will launch your scanner software. You can scan single documents or perform batch scans were you scan one document after another. When done, select save and select the PDF Format option.
Also, on an added note, you can also save image files in FastStone Image Viewer to the PDF format, as well. Very powerful image viewer utility that can either be installed or used as a portable app.
Thought this to be worthwhile to share… Android Central has a review of 4 document scanners for your smartphone. My favorite is CamScanner. Most people do not realize there are apps out there that are exclusively made to scan documents, pictures, etc… How good are these scanners? Well, let’s just say, I don’t have a scanner hooked to my computer anymore and exclusively use CamScanner to scan, store, share, and email my documents.
Keeping track of bills and important documents is easier once they live in the cloud, and these apps can help you out. Here are the picks for the best document scanning apps as reviewed by Android Central:
The world’s No. 1 mobile document scanning and sharing app is how “CamScanner” is described on Google Play. CamScanner is an app that has been exclusively developed to scan documents, pictures, etc. using your smartphone. How good is it? Well, I use it a lot and don’t even use the scanner that is with my computer anymore when it comes to scanning anything. The reason for that is that CamScanner is much faster than the scanner attached to your computer, is portable (because it is on my smartphone) and after I scan a document or picture, it automatically aligns the result and is saved to my phone (as a PDF file or image file). I can also upload the scanned result to my Google Drive.
I typically do not purchase apps or software and look for the free stuff; however, CamScanner is the exception. I highly recommend this app.

Did you know that you can scan documents with your smartphone? Sure, you can take a photo of a document; however, there are apps out there specifically designed to scan documents by taking a snapshot of the document, squaring it up, converting it to other formats (such as JPG and PDF), and saving it to the cloud (or sharing directly with others). My favorite is CamScanner (SEE VIDEO BELOW).
